Upper Basalt Geothermal Exploration Project

Map of Upper Basalt Exploration Sites

The Upper Basalt Exploration Project is located in an area west of Highway 395, north of State Route 203, and northeast of Shady Rest Park, and entirely on public lands within the Inyo National Forest.  Ormat proposed to:

  • drill and monitor up to nine small diameter observation holes and
  • drill, test and complete up to four large diameter geothermal exploration wells from a total of nine sites

The U.S. Forest Service (USFS) and the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) prepared an environmental assessment in conformance with requirements of the National Environmental Policy Act, Ormat conducted a public tour of the sites on June 29, 2002.

The project was approved in 2005 and two production wells were drilled and connected to the existing power plant. See the Basalt Canyon Geothermal Pipeline Project for mor details.
